Music Industry Terminology

Convergence: Technology merging on different media platforms. e.g. a phone with a camera
Synergy: Media platforms going together e.g. soundtrack and merchandise
Globalisation: Going on a worldwide scale
Conglomerate: Small company's in a large one
Vertical Integration: Have distributors and people who record their music
Niche Audience: Audience with a particular need or want
Consumption: How we get the music e.g. file sharing or downloading
Distribution: How the music is got to us e.g. through iTunes
Early adopters: People who get the latest technology before everyone else
P2P: Sending files to your friends
Portability: Been able to carry your music around with you, it's portable
Miniaturisation: Making it smaller
Analogue: Having to physically touch it to be played e.g. the needle on a record player
Digitalisation: Doesn't need to have physical contact to be played
Independent label: Doesn't rely on any of the large labels to distribute/produce it's own music
Subsidiary: Smaller labels within a large one
Personalisation: Making it personal to you
Download: Getting a file digitally.
